TEDx: Barrie Schwortz on The Shroud of Turin

Jan 06

Barrie Schwortz, an Orthodox Jew, spends much of his time educating Christians that the Turin Shroud may well be an artifact of Jesus. An expert on imaging, he was the official documenting photographer for the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP), the 1978 team that conducted the first in-depth scientific examination of the Shroud. In 2009, he founded the Shroud of Turin Education and Research Association, Inc. (STERA, Inc.). Schwortz began as a skeptic of the shroud, but by scientific evidence became absolutely convinced of its authenticity. To be open-minded and brave enough to immerse oneself in the evidence of beliefs that go against your own, and allow yourself to be convinced of their validity, requires a courage and honesty that not many can claim. This is what Barrie Schwortz has been doing for the past 30 years…

Panel Discussion: ‘Experiencing Death: An Insider’s Perspective’

Panel Discussion: ‘Experiencing Death: An Insider’s Perspective’

Dec 21

For millennia, human beings have wondered what happens when we die. What is the first-person experience of dying and being brought back to life? Technological advances in resuscitation science have now added an intriguing new chapter to the literature of “out of body” or “near-death experiences” by eliciting detailed and vivid accounts of those who have approached the threshold of death. However we might seek to explain such phenomena, it is no longer tenable to simply dismiss this accumulating body of firsthand experiences. Can these experiences be explained through the lens of biology and neuroscience? What can we learn from the transformative accounts of those who have crossed the threshold of death? How have their experiences affected their sense of self and identity? Join neurologist Kevin Nelson, psychiatrist Peter Fenwick, orthopedic surgeon Mary Neal, and emergency medicine expert Sam Parnia as they share some of these remarkable stories and discuss how they analyze such experiences in light of their own backgrounds and training…

TED Censors Alternative Speakers (Updated)

Apr 18

TED has removed the license of TEDxWestHollywood for their planned “Brother, Can You Spare a Paradigm?” event, says the TEDxWestHollywood blog. The takedown was only a couple of weeks before the April 14 event (and after they had spent more than a year preparing). In an email to Suzanne Taylor, the organizer of TEDxWestHollywood, a representative of TED outlined the objections: “And when we look at your speaker line-up, we see several people who promote — as fact — theories that are well outside what most scientists would accept as credible. … We disallow speakers who use the language of science to claim they have proven the truth of ideas that are speculative and which have failed to gain significant scientific acceptance.” So which specific speakers does TED object to? “The names of note they wanted us to qualify for them were Marianne Williamson, Russell Targ, Larry Dossey, and Marilyn Schlitz”…

NHNE’s NDE Classes In Sedona

NHNE’s NDE Classes In Sedona

Aug 20

The NHNE NDE classes that are presently taking place in Sedona grew out of two presentations that David Sunfellow gave in January and March of 2012. Entitled “How Near-Death Experiences Are Changing The World,” these presentations were later reworked into a two-part YouTube video which is now available online. The purpose of this presentation was twofold: First, to provide a comprehensive overview of the history and growing global importance of near-death experiences; and second, to come to a deeper understanding of the core truths presented by NDEs and wrestle these understandings into daily practices that could transform the lives of those who practiced them. That’s what is happening now in Sedona…

Esalen, Now 50 Years Old, Ponders Its Future

Aug 20

As Esalen prepares to observe its 50th anniversary next month, people are still making pilgrimages here, drawn by its focus on healing, melding of traditions and mantra of “spiritual but not religious.” Esalen’s leaders say they are tweaking the institute’s balance between the personal and the social with an emphasis on the latter so they can present the next “edge” to America. But others, including people formerly and currently associated with Esalen, say it is losing its relevance in a culture where New Age has become a cliché. Others view Esalen’s management as corporate types bent on transforming the retreat into a boutique resort…

UFO: Travis Walton Visits Sedona (Updated)

UFO: Travis Walton Visits Sedona (Updated)

Jun 21

Most of us have heard the story: In November of 1975 Travis Walton was thinning trees near Snowflake, Arizona, with a team of six other workers. While driving home after work, Walton and his six co-workers saw a UFO. They stopped their pickup to take a closer look and Walton, in a macho move he would live to regret, went to investigate. He jumped out of the truck, walked up under the UFO, and was struck down by a powerful beam of light that his friends thought killed him. Fearing for their lives, his friends drove off in a panic until the driver, who was Walton’s best friend, decided to return. But by the time Walton’s friends returned, both Walton and the UFO were gone. Walton’s co-workers went to the police. Extensive searches were mounted, but Walton could not be found. The authorities suspected his co-workers had killed him and invented the UFO story to cover their tracks. Five days later, after Walton’s friends had undergone (and passed) polygraph tests all telling the same story, Walton returned. Dehydrated, emotionally distraught, and unaware of how long he had been gone, Walton not only told the same story his friends had told, but also described what happened to him aboard the UFO that had abducted him. And the rest is history: Walton became an overnight celebrity and his case became “the best documented case of alien abduction ever recorded.” 35 years later, Walton still lives in Snowflake. And tonight he was in Sedona telling his tale to a packed room of enthusiastic listeners. The event took place at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church…

P.M.H. Atwater: ‘NDE As A Threshold Experience’

P.M.H. Atwater: ‘NDE As A Threshold Experience’

Feb 15

P.M.H. Atwater writes: “My research has shown me that the near-death experience is not some kind of anomaly, but is, rather, part of the larger genre of transformations of consciousness. The clue most researchers miss is stress; specifically, the intensity which comes from that stress (known in shamanism as “high stress”). The entire pattern of aftereffects and the degree to which people change, can be traced to that factor. It’s the intensity that shifts experiencers into what is called a “threshold experience” – one that straddles the boundary between this world and other worlds, between brain and that which lies beyond what the brain can access, between reality and miracles, mind and spirit, life and death, heaven and hell, sanity and insanity. Once we understand this shift, we can begin to unravel how the transformational process works. At the threshold of who we think we are and what lies beyond body and brain, is the core of ancient mysteries. We are transformed by the Oneness we find there…”

Robert Augustus Masters: Spiritual Bypassing

Robert Augustus Masters: Spiritual Bypassing

Feb 05

Spiritual bypassing, a term first coined by psychologist John Welwood in 1984, is the use of spiritual practices and beliefs to avoid dealing with our painful feelings, unresolved wounds, and developmental needs. It is much more common than we might think and, in fact, is so pervasive as to go largely unnoticed, except in its more obvious extremes. Spiritual bypassing is a very persistent shadow of spirituality, manifesting in many forms, often without being acknowledged as such. Aspects of spiritual bypassing include exaggerated detachment, emotional numbing and repression, overemphasis on the positive, anger-phobia, blind or overly tolerant compassion, weak or too porous boundaries, lopsided development (cognitive intelligence often being far ahead of emotional and moral intelligence), debilitating judgment about one’s negativity or shadow side, devaluation of the personal relative to the spiritual, and delusions of having arrived at a higher level of being…

Daria Musk: Google+’s Secret Weapon Against Twitter & Facebook (Updated)

Daria Musk: Google+’s Secret Weapon Against Twitter & Facebook (Updated)

Jan 12

This summer I was lugging my guitar amp through the rain, getting ready to play a dive bar in upstate NY, and my phone started buzzing… It was my big brother who lives out in California, he said, “Hey, do you need an invitation to Google+? Maybe you could be one of the first musicians on there.” I was like, “What’s Google+!? I gotta make sound-check!” Click. The next day I signed up to Google+ and I saw this feature called the Hangout — A video-chat where you can see and interact with up to 10 people at once. And I thought, maybe I could use this to play a concert without having to lug my amps through the rain! 3 days later, on July 16th, I stood in my little make-shift studio in the woods of Connecticut and clicked start a Hangout at 8pm. And at 8:01pm there was no one there. But just then a face popped in, and another and another and they were from England and Sweden and India and Texas and The Dominican Republic and Portugal… And they said, “So are you going to play?” That night I saw the sunrise in Norway through a guy named Martin’s screen. I saw little girls in Australia dancing to my songs with the Sunday morning light streaming into my studio when it was still Saturday night here. I got to tour the world in a night, and my heart, life and career were changed forever, in an instant…

In this 2008 workshop, Dr. Moody will present his work with near-death experiences, as well as other spiritual experiences. He describes in detail what these experiences mean to those who have them and he will give an in depth review of the latest research findings on life after death. Dr. Moody will discuss the significance of spiritual experiences for all humankind, unraveling life’s deepest mystery, ‘What happens when we die?

Synchronicity Google Style: Dalai Lama & Desmond Tutu Hangout On Google+

Synchronicity Google Style: Dalai Lama & Desmond Tutu Hangout On Google+

Dec 12

Small is truly beautiful. A single email winged its way from the Dalai Lama’s office to my Google colleague Shailesh in India and then on to Vic in the U.S. and Marvin in Korea before landing finally in my inbox. It expressed an interest that the Office of the Dalai Lama had in the product I am working on — Google+ — and it started me noodling some ideas on a piece of paper. One of them was to put together The Dalai Lama with Archbishop Desmond Tutu in a Google+ Hangout and allow thousands of people to view it live on the Internet. I told a few colleagues about this random and crazy idea… and the rest is history…

Nevada Health Dept. Raids Local ‘Farm To Fork’ Picnic Dinner

It is the latest case of extreme government food tyranny, and one that is sure to have you reeling in anger and disgust. Health department officials recently conducted a raid of Quail Hollow Farm, an organic community supported agriculture (CSA) farm in southern Nevada, during its special “farm to fork” picnic dinner put on for guests — and the agent who arrived on the scene ordered that all the fresh, local produce and pasture-based meat that was intended for the meal be destroyed with bleach…
