10/23/12 Sedona NDE Class Notes

Oct 24

David Sunfellow writes: “For the last couple of months, we’ve been studying The Light & The Light Review (pdf). Tonight we dove into the final part of this paper, “6. Life Reviews from God’s Perspective”. The ideas presented in the final chapter of this paper are enormously important. Understanding them is critical not only living healthy, happy lives, but also to learning how to love ourselves more deeply and, by extension, others…

NHNE’s NDE Classes In Sedona

NHNE’s NDE Classes In Sedona

Aug 20

The NHNE NDE classes that are presently taking place in Sedona grew out of two presentations that David Sunfellow gave in January and March of 2012. Entitled “How Near-Death Experiences Are Changing The World,” these presentations were later reworked into a two-part YouTube video which is now available online. The purpose of this presentation was twofold: First, to provide a comprehensive overview of the history and growing global importance of near-death experiences; and second, to come to a deeper understanding of the core truths presented by NDEs and wrestle these understandings into daily practices that could transform the lives of those who practiced them. That’s what is happening now in Sedona…

Esalen, Now 50 Years Old, Ponders Its Future

Aug 20

As Esalen prepares to observe its 50th anniversary next month, people are still making pilgrimages here, drawn by its focus on healing, melding of traditions and mantra of “spiritual but not religious.” Esalen’s leaders say they are tweaking the institute’s balance between the personal and the social with an emphasis on the latter so they can present the next “edge” to America. But others, including people formerly and currently associated with Esalen, say it is losing its relevance in a culture where New Age has become a cliché. Others view Esalen’s management as corporate types bent on transforming the retreat into a boutique resort…

A day in which we remember who we are. Together. En masse. In the service of birthing a new world…”

UFO: Travis Walton Visits Sedona (Updated)

UFO: Travis Walton Visits Sedona (Updated)

Jun 21

Most of us have heard the story: In November of 1975 Travis Walton was thinning trees near Snowflake, Arizona, with a team of six other workers. While driving home after work, Walton and his six co-workers saw a UFO. They stopped their pickup to take a closer look and Walton, in a macho move he would live to regret, went to investigate. He jumped out of the truck, walked up under the UFO, and was struck down by a powerful beam of light that his friends thought killed him. Fearing for their lives, his friends drove off in a panic until the driver, who was Walton’s best friend, decided to return. But by the time Walton’s friends returned, both Walton and the UFO were gone. Walton’s co-workers went to the police. Extensive searches were mounted, but Walton could not be found. The authorities suspected his co-workers had killed him and invented the UFO story to cover their tracks. Five days later, after Walton’s friends had undergone (and passed) polygraph tests all telling the same story, Walton returned. Dehydrated, emotionally distraught, and unaware of how long he had been gone, Walton not only told the same story his friends had told, but also described what happened to him aboard the UFO that had abducted him. And the rest is history: Walton became an overnight celebrity and his case became “the best documented case of alien abduction ever recorded.” 35 years later, Walton still lives in Snowflake. And tonight he was in Sedona telling his tale to a packed room of enthusiastic listeners. The event took place at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church…

P.M.H. Atwater: ‘NDE As A Threshold Experience’

P.M.H. Atwater: ‘NDE As A Threshold Experience’

Feb 15

P.M.H. Atwater writes: “My research has shown me that the near-death experience is not some kind of anomaly, but is, rather, part of the larger genre of transformations of consciousness. The clue most researchers miss is stress; specifically, the intensity which comes from that stress (known in shamanism as “high stress”). The entire pattern of aftereffects and the degree to which people change, can be traced to that factor. It’s the intensity that shifts experiencers into what is called a “threshold experience” – one that straddles the boundary between this world and other worlds, between brain and that which lies beyond what the brain can access, between reality and miracles, mind and spirit, life and death, heaven and hell, sanity and insanity. Once we understand this shift, we can begin to unravel how the transformational process works. At the threshold of who we think we are and what lies beyond body and brain, is the core of ancient mysteries. We are transformed by the Oneness we find there…”

Called “How Near-Death Experiences Are Changing The World”, this talk will be the same presentation I gave at the Sedona Public Library on January 27th, but with additional information about the history of NDEs. It will also include a question and answer period and run a half hour longer — two and a half hours instead of two hours. I will again be using the KeyNote/PowerPoint presentation I created that includes summaries of some of the most amazing near-death experiences I am aware of. Mary Jo Rapini, Andy Petro, Ellyn Dye, Colton Burpo, Elizabeth Taylor, Howard Storm, Mellen-Thomas Benedict, Nanci Danison, Jim Macartney, and Anita Moorjani are some of the NDErs that are featured in my presentation…

Robert Augustus Masters: Spiritual Bypassing

Robert Augustus Masters: Spiritual Bypassing

Feb 05

Spiritual bypassing, a term first coined by psychologist John Welwood in 1984, is the use of spiritual practices and beliefs to avoid dealing with our painful feelings, unresolved wounds, and developmental needs. It is much more common than we might think and, in fact, is so pervasive as to go largely unnoticed, except in its more obvious extremes. Spiritual bypassing is a very persistent shadow of spirituality, manifesting in many forms, often without being acknowledged as such. Aspects of spiritual bypassing include exaggerated detachment, emotional numbing and repression, overemphasis on the positive, anger-phobia, blind or overly tolerant compassion, weak or too porous boundaries, lopsided development (cognitive intelligence often being far ahead of emotional and moral intelligence), debilitating judgment about one’s negativity or shadow side, devaluation of the personal relative to the spiritual, and delusions of having arrived at a higher level of being…

Daria Musk: Google+’s Secret Weapon Against Twitter & Facebook (Updated)

Daria Musk: Google+’s Secret Weapon Against Twitter & Facebook (Updated)

Jan 12

This summer I was lugging my guitar amp through the rain, getting ready to play a dive bar in upstate NY, and my phone started buzzing… It was my big brother who lives out in California, he said, “Hey, do you need an invitation to Google+? Maybe you could be one of the first musicians on there.” I was like, “What’s Google+!? I gotta make sound-check!” Click. The next day I signed up to Google+ and I saw this feature called the Hangout — A video-chat where you can see and interact with up to 10 people at once. And I thought, maybe I could use this to play a concert without having to lug my amps through the rain! 3 days later, on July 16th, I stood in my little make-shift studio in the woods of Connecticut and clicked start a Hangout at 8pm. And at 8:01pm there was no one there. But just then a face popped in, and another and another and they were from England and Sweden and India and Texas and The Dominican Republic and Portugal… And they said, “So are you going to play?” That night I saw the sunrise in Norway through a guy named Martin’s screen. I saw little girls in Australia dancing to my songs with the Sunday morning light streaming into my studio when it was still Saturday night here. I got to tour the world in a night, and my heart, life and career were changed forever, in an instant…

Japanese Buddhists Use Bar For Community Outreach

Japanese Buddhists Use Bar For Community Outreach

Dec 29

This city is said to be honeycombed with 10,000 nightspots, most no bigger than an American living room. So to Japanese, it makes perfect sense that Buddhist monks would run their own themed bars, complete with incense, mandala sacred posters and religious altars. As for the monks themselves, they say that tending bar is, ironically, one of the best ways of connecting with their roots…
