New Book Series: ‘The Alchemy of Dreams’

New Book Series: ‘The Alchemy of Dreams’

Apr 07

David Sunfellow writes: “Let me cut to the chase: Wesley Wyatt is the most skilled person I know at dream work and dream interpretation. His abilities with dreams arise out of a lifetime of working with his dreams and the dreams of others. I know because I’m his brother. We not only learned how to work with our dreams together, but we have spent four decades sharing dreams and honing our skills. Whether you are someone new to dreams and dream work, or a seasoned veteran, everyone can benefit from the treasures my brother has collected over the years. Do yourself a favor. Buy his books. And then buy a few copies to share with those you love. While we are all born with angelic companions, in the form of dreams, only those who actually know how to work with these powerful, magical forces can make the most of their gifts. My brother can show you how to tap the same forces that have guided, protected, healed, and inspired many of humankind’s most celebrated dreamers. The Alchemy of Dreams, in other words, are spiritual dynamite. These books contain pearls of great price that can make everything better, deeper, healthier, happier.”

Shadow: An App To Record The Dreams Of Humankind

Shadow: An App To Record The Dreams Of Humankind

Sep 22

Our brain is an incredibly creative problem solver. And some parts of it are most active while we’re sleeping. Electricity, Frankenstein’s monster, nonviolent resistance, laser technology — all of these were conceived in dreams. Sleep is where some of humanity’s most incredible creations got their start. Yet, we forget 95% of our dreams within five minutes of waking up. That’s a huge amount of data — with unfathomable of potential — we forget each day, all because we don’t have a good way to record and understand it. What would happen if we remembered? Even better, what if we learned to make sense of it? The dream ecosystem has incredible potential to bring us together, and it’s been ignored long enough. Scientists understand the neurology of sleep, but not the content of dreams. We want to build SHADOW to bridge the gap…

TED: ‘Eleanor Longden: The Voices In My Head’

Aug 15

To all appearances, Eleanor Longden was just like every other student, heading to college full of promise and without a care in the world. That was until the voices in her head started talking. Initially innocuous, these internal narrators became increasingly antagonistic and dictatorial, turning her life into a living nightmare. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, hospitalized, drugged, Longden was discarded by a system that didn’t know how to help her. Longden tells the moving tale of her years-long journey back to mental health, and makes the case that it was through learning to listen to her voices that she was able to survive…

Quote: Plato & Joseph Dillard

Quote: Plato & Joseph Dillard

May 24

“Strange times are these in which we live when old and young are taught in falsehood’s school. And the one man who dares to tell the truth (Socrates) is called at once a lunatic and fool.”

– Plato (429-347 BC)

“Plato probably didn’t realize that the perennial problem he was describing is a macrocosmic out-picturing of an interior reality with which all men, if they wake up enough, must wrestle. As children we are brainwashed by the cultural assumptions of our family and society. This is inevitable, because culture has no choice but to pass what it has learned, true or not, helpful or not, down to us in the particular distorted forms that it assumes at that place and time. The one part of us that dares to tell the truth – our inner compass, as represented by our night time dreams, is called a lunatic and fool. Why? Because it is a direct threat to the agenda of the prevailing culture. This will not change until the agenda of the prevailing culture reflect the priorities of each man’s inner compass. For that to happen, children in families everywhere must be taught from the cradle to find, listen to, and follow their inner compass.”

– Joseph Dillard, creator of Integral Deep Listening

Wanda Easter Burch: ‘She Who Dreams’

Jan 02

Wanda Burch dreamt that she would die at a certain age; her dreams foretold her diagnosis of cancer, and then guided her toward treatment and wellness. She took advantage of all the usual medical resources available to her, but believes she is alive because of her intimate engagement with the dreamworld. “She Who Dreams” takes the reader into that healing dreamworld, opening a path to self-diagnosis and physical and psychic health. Through powerful prose and practical exercises, this book describes in compelling detail a life lived and deepened, and a death postponed. In the process it shows that wisdom lives within everyone, and that anyone can tap into that wisdom through dreamwork…

Panic Attacks & How To Row Your Boat Back To Saner, Calmer Shores (v1.1)

Panic Attacks & How To Row Your Boat Back To Saner, Calmer Shores (v1.1)

Dec 06

OK, something has happened (or hasn’t happened) and you notice that you are spending a lot of time worrying about it. What could happen. What might happen. How your life will probably be ruined by whatever real or imagined event you are pondering. You begin to feel panicky. Not too much at first, but the more you ponder your circumstances, they worse they seem, and the more panicky that makes you feel. A little voice inside you is telling you that you are over-reacting, but you are too upset to listen to it. And you don’t want to believe this voice anyway. So you keep focused on the problem. The more deeply you examine the situation, the more evidence you discover to support the idea that things are really awful. Terrible. Getting worse. By now, your thoughts and emotions are out of control. They are looping around and around. You’re starting to feel sick. Your head hurts. Your stomach aches. You feel like you might throw up. You’re having a full-fledged panic attack. Now that you are in the middle of an emotional hurricane, how can you row your little boat back to saner, calmer shores?

The Clearness Committee

The Clearness Committee

Nov 20

Parker J. Palmer writes: “Many of us face a dilemma when trying to deal with a personal problem, question, or decision. On the one hand, we know that the issue is ours alone to resolve and that we have the inner resources to resolve it, but access to our own resources is often blocked by layers of inner “stuff” — confusion, habitual thinking, fear, despair. On the other hand, we know that friends might help us uncover our inner resources and find our way, but by exposing our problem to others, we run the risk of being invaded and overwhelmed by their assumptions, judgments, and advice — a common and alienating experience. As a result, we often privatize these vital questions in our lives: at the very moment when we need all the help we can get, we find ourselves cut off from both our inner resources and the support of a community. For people who have experienced this dilemma, I want to describe a method invented by the Quakers, a method that protects individual identity and integrity while drawing on the wisdom of other people. It is called a “Clearness Committee.”

Robert Perry writes: “Even while being taken through a completely engrossing review of every detail of her life, [Barbara] found herself even more mesmerized with One who was taking her through the review. No matter what interaction she viewed, she said, ‘being held by God was the bigger interaction.’ She claims to have essentially been inside the workings of the divine mind: ‘I could see through God’s eyes and feel through God’s heart,’ and ‘I could sense God’s divine intelligence and it was astonishing.’ To the extent, then, that we trust Barbara’s account, then she apparently can speak with some authority on the subject of God and God’s intelligence and wisdom. That’s why I find it so interesting that she experiences the wisdom she sees operating in CMPEs as being so like what she experienced in her encounter with God…”

Tom Atlee: Public Opinion, Public Judgment & Public Wisdom

Aug 06

We are assaulted by evidence that current forms of democracy have (to put it mildly) limited capacity for generating collective wisdom. I propose that those of us in the fields of dialogue, deliberation, powerful conversation, knowledge systems, online collaboration, public engagement, political action and collective intelligence and wisdom have a responsibility to help correct that lack as soon as we can. We already have many tools, methods, and understandings to work with. We need more. Working together with a focus on generating collective wisdom, we can learn our way together into the kind of legitimate, powerful forms of public wisdom our world needs now…

Dreams: Excerpts from “Healing Dreams” by Marc Ian Barasch

Dreams: Excerpts from “Healing Dreams” by Marc Ian Barasch

Jun 21

“In our era, the past is vanishing like smoke. The ancestors and gods and spirits who speak through dreams were once welcomed into the circle of community; were among its essential members. But who now will listen to them? The cultures that honored them are dying, their very languages becoming extinct. The thread of received wisdom that has sustained us is stretched thin to breaking. Shorn of memory, we no longer recognize as part of life’s fabric those who have come before us. The voices of the myriad beings, visible and invisible, who surround us grow faint, though they are still talking in our sleep.
…Our dreams are a continuum, revealing, if we care to look, that we do not exist alone, but in a skein of relationship with all that has been, all that is, and all that shall be.” — Marc Ian Barasch

GPS For The Soul: A Killer App For Better Living

GPS For The Soul: A Killer App For Better Living

Apr 16

Arianna Huffington writes: “I’m delighted to announce that HuffPost, along with a great team of partners, is at work on an app we call “GPS for the Soul,” projected to launch in June. The philosophy behind it is based on two truths about human beings. First, that we all have within us a centered place of wisdom, harmony, and balance. This truth is embraced by a vast range of the world’s religions (“The Kingdom of Heaven is within”) and philosophies. And whether or not we believe in the existence of the soul, we’ve all experienced times in which we’re fully connected with ourselves. “Give me a place to stand and I will move the world,” said the Greek mathematician Archimedes. It’s a great way of saying that when we come from that centered place within ourselves, nothing is impossible. The second truth is that we’re all going to veer away from that place, again and again and again. That’s the nature of life. In fact, we may be off-course more often than we are on-course. So what we need is a great course-correcting mechanism — a GPS for the Soul — because otherwise the consequences can be serious, in terms of our health, our relationships, our jobs, and even our country…”

New Book: ‘The I Ching: A Biography’

New Book: ‘The I Ching: A Biography’

Apr 09

What makes a classic? First, the work must focus on matters of great importance, identifying fundamental human problems and providing some sort of guidance for dealing with them. Second, it must address these fundamental issues in “beautiful, moving, and memorable ways,” with “stimulating and inviting images.” Third, it must be complex, nuanced, comprehensive, and profound, requiring careful and repeated study in order to yield its deepest secrets and greatest wisdom. One might add that precisely because of these characteristics, a classic has great staying power across both space and time. By these criteria and by most other measures as well, the Yijing [I Ching] certainly fits the bill. And yet it seems so different from other “classics” that instantly come to mind, whether literary works such as the Odyssey, the Republic, the Divine Comedy, and The Pilgrim’s Progress or sacred scriptures like the Jewish and Christian Bibles, the Qur’an, the Hindu Vedas and the Buddhist sutras. Structurally it lacks any sort of systematic or sustained narrative, and from the standpoint of spirituality, it offers no vision of religious salvation, much less the promise of an afterlife or even the idea of rebirth. There is no jealous and angry God in it; no evil presence like Satan; no prophet, sinner, or savior; no story of floods or plagues; no tale of people swallowed up by whales or turned into pillars of salt. The Changes posits neither a purposeful beginning nor an apocalyptic end; and whereas classics such as the Bible and Qur’an insist that humans are answerable not to their own culture but to a being that transcends all culture, the Yijing takes essentially the opposite position. One might add that in the Western tradition, God reveals only what God chooses to reveal, while in traditional China, the “mind of Heaven” was considered ultimately knowable and accessible through the Changes…

The VisionQuest Game

Several years ago, I created a website for an innovative divination game that some friends and I have been perfecting over the years. I have finally redone that website, modernizing it and making it much more user-friendly. The new website contains updated photos of the game, descriptions of how the game is played, and lists of recommended game decks, both handmade and commercial. What makes this particular guidance tool different from other age-old divination systems is that it marries four principles that have emerged and merged during our particular time period: it combines the wisdom of diverse spiritual traditions; it draws upon the life experience, knowledge, and intuition of individual players; it evokes the power of group consciousness and prayer; and it encourages people to infuse the game with deeper meanings by creating their own game decks, rules and rituals…

The Art & Science Of Dreaming

The Art & Science Of Dreaming

Aug 11

People throughout the ages have regarded dreams as a source of creative inspiration. A number of famous works of Western art and literature were directly influenced by their creator’s dreams. Among writers, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley dreamed up several key scenes in her novel Frankenstein, and Robert Louis Stevenson had a dream about a divided soul at war with itself that gave him the core plot idea for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Surrealist painters like Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte drew upon their dreams for bizarre, symbol-laden images of melting clocks and floating bowler hats. In more recent years, a number of prominent movie directors have experienced dreams that influenced their films, including David Lynch in Blue Velvet, Francis Ford Coppola in Apocalypse Now, and Akira Kurusawa in Dreams. Contemporary musicians have also described their dreams as creative inspirations. Paul McCartney had a dream that gave him the tune for “Yesterday,” and Sting’s song “The Lazarus Heart” came from a personal nightmare…
