Andrew Cohen & The Dark Side of Enlightenment

Andrew Cohen & The Dark Side of Enlightenment

Jun 05

As human beings, we all have the tendency to focus too strongly on the vertical, spiritual side of our natures, or too strongly on the horizontal, human side of our natures. In order to live healthy, happy, balanced lives, we have to balance and integrate these two forces. When we swing too far one way or the other it’s only a matter of time before we get into serious trouble. This situation that arose around Andrew Cohen is a text-book case of what can happen if vertical and spiritual perspectives are overemphasized…

The Good Country Index

The Good Country Index

Jul 05

The idea of the Good Country Index is pretty simple: to measure what each country on earth contributes to the common good of humanity, and what it takes away. Using a wide range of data from the U.N. and other international organisations, we’ve given each country a balance sheet to show at a glance whether it’s a net creditor to mankind, a burden on the planet, or something in between…

TED: Amy Cuddy: ‘Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are’

May 04

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success…

The Hopping Stone Vision

The Hopping Stone Vision

Apr 07

Deep in the southwest deserts, an old medicine man and young brave stand atop a great plateau. Together they silently survey all the Earth. After what seems like ages of absorbing all that can be seen, the old man taps his medicine stick on the ground. From twelve different directions great streaks of lightning strike the Earth, and from each place the lightning strikes, twelve great stones begin to form. As the stones form, the old man begins to sing an ancient song…

Movie Worth Seeing: ‘Jodhaa Akbar’

Dec 19

If you are looking for an interesting movie, with a beautiful message, take this one for a spin. It’s long, but worth it. One Amazon viewer writes: “It is a beautiful story about a wise leader who bucks tradition and chooses compassion over bloodshed, openness and acceptance over intolerance. It is also a wonderful love story.”

Michael Murphy: 50 Years of Esalen

Michael Murphy: 50 Years of Esalen

Dec 05

Before the Esalen Institute, there was Michael Murphy’s family’s property, a choice chunk of gorgeous Big Sur, where, in 1962, Murphy (writer, seeker) and his friend and fellow human potentialist Dick Price dedicated the Murphy land to the now 50-year-old center for the pursuit of personal and social consciousness-raising. Notables like Aldous Huxley, Abraham Maslow, Joan Baez and Henry Miller contemplated themselves and the world there. Murphy, now director of Esalen’s Center for Theory and Research, answers questions about Esalen and its first 50 years…

The Clearness Committee

The Clearness Committee

Nov 20

Parker J. Palmer writes: “Many of us face a dilemma when trying to deal with a personal problem, question, or decision. On the one hand, we know that the issue is ours alone to resolve and that we have the inner resources to resolve it, but access to our own resources is often blocked by layers of inner “stuff” — confusion, habitual thinking, fear, despair. On the other hand, we know that friends might help us uncover our inner resources and find our way, but by exposing our problem to others, we run the risk of being invaded and overwhelmed by their assumptions, judgments, and advice — a common and alienating experience. As a result, we often privatize these vital questions in our lives: at the very moment when we need all the help we can get, we find ourselves cut off from both our inner resources and the support of a community. For people who have experienced this dilemma, I want to describe a method invented by the Quakers, a method that protects individual identity and integrity while drawing on the wisdom of other people. It is called a “Clearness Committee.”

NHNE’s NDE Classes In Sedona

NHNE’s NDE Classes In Sedona

Aug 20

The NHNE NDE classes that are presently taking place in Sedona grew out of two presentations that David Sunfellow gave in January and March of 2012. Entitled “How Near-Death Experiences Are Changing The World,” these presentations were later reworked into a two-part YouTube video which is now available online. The purpose of this presentation was twofold: First, to provide a comprehensive overview of the history and growing global importance of near-death experiences; and second, to come to a deeper understanding of the core truths presented by NDEs and wrestle these understandings into daily practices that could transform the lives of those who practiced them. That’s what is happening now in Sedona…

Esalen, Now 50 Years Old, Ponders Its Future

Esalen, Now 50 Years Old, Ponders Its Future

Aug 20

As Esalen prepares to observe its 50th anniversary next month, people are still making pilgrimages here, drawn by its focus on healing, melding of traditions and mantra of “spiritual but not religious.” Esalen’s leaders say they are tweaking the institute’s balance between the personal and the social with an emphasis on the latter so they can present the next “edge” to America. But others, including people formerly and currently associated with Esalen, say it is losing its relevance in a culture where New Age has become a cliché. Others view Esalen’s management as corporate types bent on transforming the retreat into a boutique resort…

New Book: ‘Integral Dreaming – A Holistic Approach to Dreams’

New Book: ‘Integral Dreaming – A Holistic Approach to Dreams’

Mar 23

This innovative book offers a holistic approach to one of the most fascinating and puzzling aspects of human experience: dreaming. Advocating the broad-ranging vision termed “integral” by thinkers from Aurobindo to Wilber, Fariba Bogzaran and Daniel Deslauriers consider dreams as multifaceted phenomena in an exploration that includes scientific, phenomenological, sociocultural, and subjective knowledge. Drawing from historical, cross-cultural, and contemporary practices, both interpretive and noninterpretive, the authors present Integral Dream Practice, an approach that emphasizes the dreamer’s creative participation, reflective capacities, and mindful awareness in working with dreams. Bogzaran and Deslauriers have developed this comprehensive way of approaching dreams over many years and highlight their methods in a chapter that unfolds a single dream, showing how sustained creative exploration over time leads to transformative change…

The VisionQuest Game

The VisionQuest Game

Feb 10

Several years ago, I created a website for an innovative divination game that some friends and I have been perfecting over the years. I have finally redone that website, modernizing it and making it much more user-friendly. The new website contains updated photos of the game, descriptions of how the game is played, and lists of recommended game decks, both handmade and commercial. What makes this particular guidance tool different from other age-old divination systems is that it marries four principles that have emerged and merged during our particular time period: it combines the wisdom of diverse spiritual traditions; it draws upon the life experience, knowledge, and intuition of individual players; it evokes the power of group consciousness and prayer; and it encourages people to infuse the game with deeper meanings by creating their own game decks, rules and rituals…

Robert Augustus Masters: Spiritual Bypassing

Robert Augustus Masters: Spiritual Bypassing

Feb 05

Spiritual bypassing, a term first coined by psychologist John Welwood in 1984, is the use of spiritual practices and beliefs to avoid dealing with our painful feelings, unresolved wounds, and developmental needs. It is much more common than we might think and, in fact, is so pervasive as to go largely unnoticed, except in its more obvious extremes. Spiritual bypassing is a very persistent shadow of spirituality, manifesting in many forms, often without being acknowledged as such. Aspects of spiritual bypassing include exaggerated detachment, emotional numbing and repression, overemphasis on the positive, anger-phobia, blind or overly tolerant compassion, weak or too porous boundaries, lopsided development (cognitive intelligence often being far ahead of emotional and moral intelligence), debilitating judgment about one’s negativity or shadow side, devaluation of the personal relative to the spiritual, and delusions of having arrived at a higher level of being…

“It’s been shown that people (both at the level of individuals and of entire societies) who have higher levels of education and measured intelligence commit fewer violent crimes, cooperate more in experimental games, have more classically-liberal attitudes, are less likely to be racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, and are more receptive to democracy.” — Steven Pinker
