In his new book Paranormal: My Life in Pursuit of the Afterlife, co-written with Paul Perry, Moody gives us the background behind his investigations into NDE's and other, even more esoteric phenomena. The book is briskly paced, engagingly written, and remarkably open. Perhaps the most surprising revelation is that for most of his life Moody has suffered from a serious thyroid condition that can cause severe mood swings, and that, during one period of intense depression when his thyroid had essentially shut down, he attempted suicide and had a brief, preliminary NDE (or at least the prologue to an NDE) of his own...

NDE researcher Bruce Greyson was recently invited to speak with the Dalai Lama at a dialogue between Western neuroscientists and Buddhist monks, as part of His Holiness's long-term effort to build a bridge between science and Buddhism. Greyson presented the Dalai Lama with a copy of The Handbook of Near-Death Experiences, which summarizes the first thirty years of research on NDEs; it is edited by Janice Holden, Greyson, and Debbie James. The Director of the Library of Tibetan Works & Archives, which preserves and publishes modern editions of ancient Tibetan texts, asked for permission to translate the Handbook into Tibetan, so they could use it in the monastic curriculum for their monks.

P.M.H. Atwater writes: "My research has shown me that the near-death experience is not some kind of anomaly, but is, rather, part of the larger genre of transformations of consciousness. The clue most researchers miss is stress; specifically, the intensity which comes from that stress (known in shamanism as "high stress"). The entire pattern of aftereffects and the degree to which people change, can be traced to that factor. It's the intensity that shifts experiencers into what is called a "threshold experience" – one that straddles the boundary between this world and other worlds, between brain and that which lies beyond what the brain can access, between reality and miracles, mind and spirit, life and death, heaven and hell, sanity and insanity. Once we understand this shift, we can begin to unravel how the transformational process works. At the threshold of who we think we are and what lies beyond body and brain, is the core of ancient mysteries. We are transformed by the Oneness we find there..."

Chris Carter writes: "I examined all of the other attempts to explain away the NDE as the product of a malfunctioning brain, and ultimately not one stood up to critical scrutiny. The conclusion I finally arrived at was that the NDE is exactly what it appears to be: a genuine separation of mind from body during the early stages of biological death..."

I will be giving a second NDE presentation at the Sedona Creative Life Center on March 16th. Called "How Near-Death Experiences Are Changing The World", this talk will be the same presentation I gave at the Sedona Public Library on January 27th, but with additional information about the history of NDEs. It will also include a question and answer period and run a half hour longer -- two and a half hours instead of two hours. I will again be using the KeyNote/PowerPoint presentation I created that includes summaries of some of the most amazing near-death experiences I am aware of. Mary Jo Rapini, Andy Petro, Ellyn Dye, Colton Burpo, Elizabeth Taylor, Howard Storm, Mellen-Thomas Benedict, Nanci Danison, Jim Macartney, and Anita Moorjani are some of the NDErs that are featured in my presentation...
