Steven Pinker: Humankind Is Getting Nicer

Steven Pinker: Humankind Is Getting Nicer

Nov 27

What may be the most important thing that has ever happened in human history is that violence has gone down, by dramatic degrees, and in many dimensions all over the world and in many spheres of behavior: genocide, war, human sacrifice, torture, slavery, and the treatment of racial minorities, women, children, and animals...

Is The End Of The World Nigh?

Is The End Of The World Nigh?

Nov 20

Judging by the run of successful natural disaster films in the past few years, people are fascinated by the idea of the end of the world. In Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later, a virus ravaged the UK and beyond; an asteroid was the world-ending threat in Deep Impact and Armageddon; and climate change got a starring role in The Day After Tomorrow. But made-up doomsday tales pale into nothing, creatively speaking, when contrasted with what is actually possible. Look through the lens of science and "the end" becomes much more interesting...

Supercomputer Predicts Revolution

Supercomputer Predicts Revolution

Sep 27

A new type of software has been shown to predict revolutions by mining news reports around the world. When put to the test -- bingo! -- the software showed spikes just before the recent Egyptian and Libyan upheavals. It was also able to sift through world news to retrospectively pinpoint Osama Bin Ladin's location to within 200 km...

Carl Jung’s Near-Death Experience

Carl Jung’s Near-Death Experience

Aug 21

In a hospital in Switzerland in 1944, the world-renowned psychiatrist Carl G. Jung, had a heart attack and then a near-death experience. His vivid encounter with the light, plus the intensely meaningful insights led Jung to conclude that his experience came from something real and eternal. Jung's experience is unique in that he saw the Earth from a vantage point of about a thousand miles above it. His incredibly accurate view of the Earth from outer space was described about two decades before astronauts in space first described it. Subsequently, as he reflected on life after death, Jung recalled the meditating Hindu from his near-death experience and read it as a parable of the archetypal Higher Self, the God-image within. Carl Jung, who founded analytical psychology, centered on the archetypes of the collective unconscious. The following is an excerpt from his autobiography entitled Memories, Dreams, Reflections describing his near-death experience...

Our Biggest Security Threat Is Global Warming-Induced Extreme Weather

Our Biggest Security Threat Is Global Warming-Induced Extreme Weather

Aug 06

Scientists have been predicting for years that global warming would produce record-breaking extremes on either side of the thermometer. This past winter, America survived its so-called snowpocalypse, and now that summer has arrived, we've got a heat dome... It conforms easily to the ravages of Kevin Borden and Susan Cutter's so-called Death Map which in 2008 peered into climate change's crystal ball and found intensifying natural disasters capable of regionally reshaping the nation with every catastrophe. These global warming nightmares, not domestic or international terrorists, are the most dangerous threat to global security in existence...

Scientists Discover Tipping Point For The Spread Of Ideas

Jul 25

Scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have found that when just 10 percent of the population holds an unshakable belief, their belief will always be adopted by the majority of the society. The scientists, who are members of the Social Cognitive Networks Academic Research Center (SCNARC) at Rensselaer, used computational and analytical methods to discover the tipping point where a minority belief becomes the majority opinion. The finding has implications for the study and influence of societal interactions ranging from the spread of innovations to the movement of political ideals...

Dubai Weather Wizards Create Rain In Desert

Dubai Weather Wizards Create Rain In Desert

Jul 20

A Swiss company called Meteo Systems has developed a technology called Weathertec that uses giant ionizers to make rain. If the ambient humidity in the area reaches the required minimum of 30%, then you turn the ionizers on and start pumping electrons into the atmosphere. Assuming that you have high temperatures, the electrons will rise with the heat and water molecules will start condensing around them. At this point, you have clouds that will produce rain once they are dense enough...

A Rare & Remarkable Interview With Bill Gates

A Rare & Remarkable Interview With Bill Gates

Jun 14

There’s something surreal about hearing Gates talk on such a personal level. Meeting him is comparable to meeting a head of state. We’re in a conference room in the sparkling new home of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, a $500 million glass-walled, eco-friendly office space which Gates jokes is ‘mostly the brainchild of my wife -- I just signed all the cheques’. To say that Gates is socially awkward is putting it mildly. This is a man who built a multi-billion-dollar company yet seems totally unaware of the social niceties of life. His voice is loud and oddly high-pitched. He’s in constant motion as he speaks, rocking in his chair with his arms folded protectively in front of him, tapping his toes, fiddling with a pen. He fails to look me in the eye and doesn’t engage in small talk...

David Spangler: Apocalypse Porn

David Spangler: Apocalypse Porn

Jun 03

Apocalypse porn is not true prophecy. It inspires fear, and fear is notorious for creating boundaries, constrictions, and a narrowing of imagination, creativity and possibilities. We are at a time, I believe, when we cannot afford to be narrowed. If all the prophecies are right in essence, if not in specifics -- and I believe that they are -- then we need to reach out to each other across our boundaries to enhance communication and co-creativity. We need each other, not simply to survive but to think together, to feel together, to intuit together, to co-create together. We need to be expansive and collaborative with each other and with the world itself. For if the prophecies are correct in essence, and again I believe they are, then we are in the presence of immense possibilities and opportunities which can best be realized if we act together with love, compassion, and mutual respect...

Ooops: World Doesn’t End On May 21st, So How About October 21st?

May 24

A California preacher who foretold of the world's end only to see the appointed day pass with no extraordinarily cataclysmic event has revised his apocalyptic prophecy, saying he was off by five months and the Earth actually will be obliterated on Oct. 21. Harold Camping, who predicted that 200 million Christians would be taken to heaven Saturday before catastrophe struck the planet, apologized Monday evening for not having the dates "worked out as accurately as I could have."

Harold Camping & His Doomsday Prediction(s)

Harold Camping & His Doomsday Prediction(s)

Mar 24

Save the date: May 21, 2011. If preacher Harold Camping is right, that's the exact date Jesus will return and the righteous will fly up to heaven, leaving behind only their clothes. That will be followed by five months of fire, brimstone and plagues, with millions of people dying each day and corpses piling in the streets. Finally, on Oct. 21, the world ends exactly as the Book of Revelation says it will -- with a bottomless pit, a lake of fire and, at last, a new heaven and new earth. Doomsday preachers come and go, but at nearly 90 years old, the spry Camping has managed to ignite a nationwide movement that has garnered national attention...

What Are The Odds? U.S. Nuke Plants Ranked By Quake Risk

What Are The Odds? U.S. Nuke Plants Ranked By Quake Risk

Mar 22

What are the odds that a nuclear emergency like the one at Fukushima Dai-ichi could happen in the central or eastern United States? They'd have to be astronomical, right? It turns out that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has calculated the odds of an earthquake causing catastrophic failure to a nuclear plant here. Each year, at the typical nuclear reactor in the U.S., there's a 1 in 74,176 chance of an earthquake strong enough to cause damage to the reactor's core, which could expose the public to radiation. No tsunami required...

Doomsday Predictions (Including December 21, 2012 & May 21, 2011)

Mar 06

Throughout time, and across continents and belief systems, humankind has dished out enough end dates to fill a doomsday menu. The backgrounds of the people who serve them up may differ, as might the details of what will unfold, but the general apocalyptic worldview is nothing original, says Lorenzo DiTommaso, an associate professor of religion at Concordia University in Montréal, Quebec and author of the forthcoming book, “The Architecture of Apocalypticism.” Having studied apocalyptic movements for nearly 12 years. He calls the apocalyptic worldview “adolescent” because it’s “a simplistic response to complex problems” and one that “places responsibility for solving these problems with someone else or somewhere else.”

Solar Tsunami Coming

Solar Tsunami Coming

Feb 21

The event begins with a giant thermonuclear explosion on the sun. The fusion of hydrogen atoms swells up and bursts open on the sun’s surface, spewing a stew of radiation and gas particles trapped in the solar wind. The continuous but variable flow of particles and magnetic fields from the sun creates gusts that can quickly reach Earth. Within hours, a space storm, a “coronal mass ejection” (CME), accompanied by a beautiful aurora borealis or “northern lights” display of shimmering celestial curtains, bombards Earth with geomagnetic disturbances. The consequences are dramatic: disruptions to communications satellites, interference with global positioning systems (GPS) and air traffic control, and, most telling, taking down the high-voltage electric transmission system over wide swaths of the planet, blacking out more than 130 million people in the U.S. alone. Secondary effects due to the loss of the grid involve water system failures, severe disruptions to natural gas pipelines, factories shut down for weeks or months, food rotting in unrefrigerated warehouses, and unquantifiable costs to the world economy. The cost of damage to the U.S. totals $1 trillion to $2 trillion. More than 300 grounded electrical high-voltage transformers in the U.S. suffer damages so serious that they need to be replaced, putting intolerable strain on an already stressed supply chain. Recovery takes as much as a decade, as the results wreck havoc with the U.S. and world infrastructure and economy...

British Sci-Fi Series: Survivors

British Sci-Fi Series: Survivors

Feb 13

A plague of global proportions. Anarchy in the streets. The collapse of government and the rule of law -- perhaps even the end of civilization itself! -- followed by the rise of tyranny and vigilantism. There's heavy stuff happening in Survivors, a British sci-fi drama offered here with all 12 episodes from its first two (and so far only) seasons on five discs. Although it shares a title, original writer (Terry Nation), and several character names with a mid-'70s series, this is apparently not a remake. But the basic idea, detailed in the 90-minute pilot episode, is the same: Present-day Britain has fallen prey to a particularly nasty influenza virus. Within days, it's clear that the disease won't be easily contained; within a couple of weeks, at least 90 percent of the population has died from it, not merely in England but across the planet. As the world as they know it quickly falls apart -- no electricity, no communications, no mass transit, no readily available medical care -- and those who survived due to immunity start to sort themselves out, the show narrows its focus on one disparate and distinctly multicultural group...

2045: The Year Man Becomes Immortal

Feb 10

The end of human civilization as we know it is about 35 years away. We will successfully reverse-engineer the human brain by the mid-2020s. By the end of that decade, computers will be capable of human-level intelligence. Kurzweil puts the date of the Singularity -- never say he's not conservative -- at 2045. In that year, he estimates, given the vast increases in computing power and the vast reductions in the cost of same, the quantity of artificial intelligence created will be about a billion times the sum of all the human intelligence that exists today...

News: Scientists Concerned As Oceans Continue To Rise

Nov 14

Scientists long believed that the collapse of the gigantic ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica would take thousands of years, with sea level possibly rising as little as seven inches in this century, about the same amount as in the 20th century. But researchers have recently been startled to see big changes unfold in both Greenland and Antarctica. As a result of recent calculations that take the changes into account, many scientists now say that sea level is likely to rise perhaps three feet by 2100 -- an increase that, should it come to pass, would pose a threat to coastal regions the world over...

"The rapid progress of the sciences makes me sorry, at times, that I was born so soon. Imagine the power that man will have over matter, a few hundred years from now. We may learn how to remove gravity from large masses, and float them over great distances. Agriculture will double its produce with less labor. All diseases will surely be cured... even old age. If only the moral sciences could be improved as well. Perhaps men would cease to be wolves to one another... and human beings could learn to be human." -- Benjamin Franklin
