Grow Your Own Food: Sprouts
By David Sunfellow
All year round, wherever you live — in the city or the country — growing sprouts is a simple way to grow your own, highly nutritious food. When my children were growing up, I used to grow sprouts all the time. Now I’m at it again. This page has been created for NHNE readers who want to grow their own sprouts and are looking for organic sprouting seeds, supplies, and tips.
I currently use three gallon-sized jars with mesh tops secured by rubber bands. The white mesh is a tighter mesh for smaller sprouting seeds, while the black mesh is a larger mesh for larger seeds and beans. Sprouting is very simple. You simply add a small amount of sprouting seeds to your jar. Rinse the seeds once and let them soak from two to six hours. Then rinse them again and put them in something that allows the water to drain and the sprouts to breathe. Rinse twice times a day thereafter. In two to three days your sprouts are ready to eat. The three jars pictured below contain some of my favorite sprouting seeds. Left Jar: Holly’s Mix: Organic Red Lentil, Green Lentil, French Lentil, Green Pea, Adzuki, Mung; Middle Jar: Salad Mix: Organic Broccoli, Clover, Radish, Alfalfa; Right Jar: Organic Onion Seeds.
