“The story is about the historical figure, Jalal Mohammed Akbar (Hrithik Roshan), a wise 16th-century Indian ruler who unites Hindustan. When he assumes full power as Mughal emperor at 19 years old he displays wisdom and compassion combined with strategic planning and discipline. Jalal, who is Muslim, agrees to a marriage of alliance to promote peace. His betrothed is the Hindu Princess Jodha of Amer (Aishwarya Rai). This introduces two of the movie’s themes: 1. religious conflict (Muslim vs. Hindu) and 2. the blossoming love between Jalal and Jodha. The importance of religion in daily life is an integral part of this film. Jalal shows his wisdom by decreeing tolerance of all religions, not only Islam. Of course, there are the usual palace intrigues and plots to contend with. Meanwhile, tension and passion build as love grows between Jalal and Jodha. When they finally consummate their love the scene is superb! The incredible lighting and interior combined with tenderness b/w the two actors make the scene intensely sensual (without the overt sexuality often seen in this type of scene — which is a refreshing change). Roshan and Rai are gorgeous, adding to the beauty of the film. In fact, Roshan is probably one of the most handsome and charismatic men I have seen!! He gives a passionate performance particularly with his eyes and body language. Although many people have pointed out that the movie strays from historical accuracy, it is still a beautiful story about a wise leader who bucks tradition and chooses compassion over bloodshed, openness and acceptance over intolerance. It is also a wonderful love story.”

“I adore this movie. It exemplifies the historical and epic romance genres, and at the heart of it is a moral of religious coexistence which even people of our modern times should learn to adopt. The writing is lyrical, the music is beautiful, and the performances are wonderful, to say nothing for the lovely and color-rich scenery. Hrithik Roshan is perfect as the emperor, conveying authority and charisma, while at the same time proving the brusque, brooding, and unpleasant romantic leads of stories past (particularly cinema) are overrated and we should consider trading them in for more sensual and embracing models. What Aishwarya Rai doesn’t contribute in acting ‘skill’ in this particular film, her character makes up for by having an inherent sweetness and charm. The whole film is a construction of moments between the characters that are delicately romantic, the building of a love between an emperor and his empress that manages to rise above a fragile foundation of differing cultures, religions, and political upheavals. There are a few weak directing choices with the background music and fight scenes, but these are comparatively minor flaws compared to the movie’s virtue as a whole. A great movie for the historical buff that can also account themselves a hopeless romantic.”

“The spiritual history of this movie juxtaposed against the physical beauty of its two main actors has enthralled me beyond all words. I went on a search for the real Jallaludhin and found this enlightened soul was so advanced in his perception and religious tolerance, that he set a new precedence for governing. It felt as if I were reading about Ghandi. More importantly, having won Best Actor award, Hrithik Roshan, an advanced soul himself, has become very famous. He is humble, however…”

“Great piece of History, where inter-religious marraige as well as cross-cultural relations in Royal background shines out. Interesting to see how Hindu Queen makes Mogul King shapes up his secular thinking. Needless to mention eye-catching settings, jewelerys, costumes, and creation of 15th century India. The movie should be recommended to others since it is not just entertaining, but historical gem showing importance of religious harmony for the peace and unity.”

“No words are adequate to discribe the beauty of this film. I stumbled on this movie by accident and fell in love with the characters, setting and the beautiful story of Jodha and Akbar. It is a rich and stunning movie, directed with skill and grace. It is now one of my all time favorite movies and a part of our library.”
