The “Family” – Who Really Is Behind This Secret Organization? (Updated)

The “Family” – Who Really Is Behind This Secret Organization? (Updated)

Jan 04

“Jesus plus nothing” is the mantra of the Fellowship, also known as the Family, a secret, fundamentalist Christian organization peopled primarily by devout policy makers and high-ranking individuals. Though the nonbeliever’s view of religion can often be dismissive when faced with such catchphrases, in “C Street,” a nonfiction account of the extended reach of the Family, these phrases fuel moral crusades with real, and terrifying, impact. Sharlet first introduced the world to the unseen hand of the Fellowship in “The Family” in 2008, in which he reported on the organization’s beginnings in the 18th century, uncovered the role of the Family in America’s legislative system and uncovered the role of religious fundamentalism in our supposedly secular nation. In his latest book, Sharlet traces the powerful orthodoxy’s chilling influence on governments both inside and outside of the United States as well as the devastating effects of fundamentalism within the military. He uses the Fellowship’s Capitol Hill boarding house, C Street, as a passageway to a broader discussion of the Family’s influences, which range from mediating the marital disputes of Congressmen to increased military aid for countries whose prominent politicians have connections (spiritual or otherwise) with the Family…

BBC Documentary: “Pilgrims: Medjugorje” (Watch It Here)

Dec 12

Međugorje or Medjugorje is a town located in western Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Herzegovina region around 25 km southwest of Mostar and close to the border of Croatia. Since 1981, it has become a popular site of religious pilgrimage due to reports of apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local Catholics. The messages reputed to Our Lady of Međugorje have a strong following among Catholics worldwide. Međugorje has become one of the most popular pilgrimage sites for Catholics (and people of other faiths) in the world, with thousands visiting each year. It has been estimated that 30 million pilgrims have come to Međugorje since the reputed apparitions began in 1981. Many have reported visual phenomena including the sun spinning in the sky or changing colors and figures such as hearts and crosses around the sun. Some visitors have suffered eye damage while seeking to experience such phenomena. The BBC Documentary “Pilgrims” tells the story of the thousands of Northern Irish pilgrims who flock to the controversial shrine of Medjugorje…

The Search For A No-Frills Jesus

The Search For A No-Frills Jesus

Nov 26

The teachings of Jesus in Q hold the key to an understanding of Jesus that is fundamentally non-Christian. According to these scholars, the authors of Q did not view Jesus as “the Christ” (that is, as “the anointed one,” the promised Messiah), or as the redeemer who had atoned for their sins by his crucifixion, or as the son of God who rose from the dead. Instead, they say, Q’s authors esteemed Jesus as simply a roving sage who preached a life of possessionless wandering and full acceptance of one’s fellow human beings, no matter how disreputable or marginal. In that respect, they say, he was a Jesus for the America of the third millennium, a Jesus with little supernatural baggage but much respect for cultural diversity…

U.S. Exorcist-Trained Priests Overwhelmed With Requests

The rite of exorcism, rendered gory by Hollywood and ridiculed by many modern believers, has largely fallen out of favor in the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. News: First Interview With One Of The Trapped Chilean Miners

Oct 19

He is the undisputed star of the Chilean mine rescue. When Mario Sepulveda became the second miner to surface after 69 days trapped half-a-mile below ground, his cheeky gift of souvenir rocks for the Chilean president combined with his wildly enthusiastic chants of ‘Viva Chile’ alongside his rescuers led to him being dubbed Super Mario on newspaper front pages around the world. Since his rescue, the charismatic 40-year-old heavy-equipment operator has been deluged with lucrative media offers, including the chance to host his own Chilean TV show. But yesterday Mario, speaking from his hospital bed before being released last night — leaving only one of the 33 in the care of doctors — spoke exclusively to The Mail on Sunday and revealed how his jaunty facade was hiding a man tormented by the ‘nightmare’ of what he and the others faced for the initial 17 days after they were trapped — fearing they would starve to death in their underground tomb.
