I am shocked and saddened by the tragedy that occurred at Spiritual Warrior in Sedona, Arizona, Thursday evening. I wish to express my deepest heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives as well as offer my prayers for a speedy recovery for those who were taken ill. Because there are so many more questions than answers at this time I believe it inappropriate to comment further until we know more.

Out of respect for the deceased and their loved ones and for those who have taken ill and for whose speedy recovery we pray, we will not be replying to individual postings. Instead, we thank you for writing, and we hope you will share in our continued wishes of support, strength and comfort to all those impacted by this tragedy.

We also want everyone to know that our friend, Lisa Rondan, has been at the hospital monitoring the condition of Liz Neuman, Stephen Ray, Tess Wong and Sidney Spencer. Our love and warm affection is with all who mourn and with all of you in this time of grief, sadness and challenge.

With never-ending love and prayers,

Words cannot fully express how deeply I’m saddened by the news of the death of my dear friend Liz. I had the honor of knowing her for over seven years and she was deeply loved and appreciated. Liz was an amazing woman who touched so many lives, she’ll be cherished and remembered by all. Liz, you’re in our hearts forever. My continued love, prayers and support go out to her family in this time of grief and loss.

For me, for the families and friends of the sick and deceased and for many people who believe in the important work we do, these have been the most difficult ten days of our lives.

People are throwing out accusations and disparaging me and our mission. Yet despite that, and despite considerable criticism, I have chosen to continue with my work. It’s too important not to. One of the lessons I teach is that you have to confront and embrace adversity and learn and grow from it. I promise you I am doing a lot of learning and growing. I have taken heat for that decision, but if I chose to lock myself in my home, I am sure I would be criticized for hiding and not practicing what I preach.

It means a great deal to me that so many of you have come to see me speak this week and last–that you are investing your time and energy into creating more fulfilling, successful and productive lives. It reaffirms my decision to continue my schedule and these event experiences.

I want to use this forum to address the families of those whose lives were lost, James, Kirby and Liz. I have reached out to all of the families personally, but feel the need to say more. I feel your pain. I accept your anger. And I pray for you all to have some measure of peace and comfort. I want you to know that I too want to know what happened that caused this horrible tragedy. My team and I are working with the appropriate authorities and have even hired our own investigators to find out the truth.

I believe the best way to honor their amazing lives and everlasting memory is to continue this important work. Please join me in a moment of silence to pay homage to their lives and to pray for the speedy recovery of others taken ill.

The lives of the families impacted by the Sedona tragedy have been changed forever. These families deserve to have the questions raised by the tragedy answered as quickly and authoritatively as possible. That is the goal I’m dedicated to achieving.

In the days following the terrible accident, I struggled to respond in the right way. This is the most emotionally wrenching situation I’ve ever faced, and it’s now clear I must dedicate all of my physical and emotional energies to helping bring some sort of closure to this matter. That means helping the authorities and the families get to the bottom of what happened.

I’m committed to devoting all of my time, for as long as it takes, to achieve this goal. For that reason, I’m postponing all the events I had planned for the remainder of 2009. These events will be rescheduled as soon as possible in 2010—once the essential work that must be done on the Sedona tragedy has been completed.

I appreciate your patience and understanding during this difficult time. I will keep you updated regularly as we move forward about our progress and about our plans for rescheduling the postponed events.

Much love and respect,
James Arthur Ray

I’m continuing to devote all my energy to determine the facts surrounding the tragic accident at Sedona. I’ve instructed my representatives to meet with the authorities in Arizona and to share with those authorities the facts they learn. That process is ongoing.

In the meantime, I want to let you know that not only is this situation requiring all of my personal focus, it’s also consuming my entire team’s focus as well. For that reason, you can expect significant delays in responses to all general business requests. We have every intention of responding once we have helped determine what happened in Sedona.

Much love and respect,

January 13, 2010

For more than two months now we have been cooperating with Arizona authorities to help determine the cause of the tragic Sedona sweat lodge accident. We have worked to facilitate interviews involving the James Ray International employees and the authorities, and my representatives have also conducted a large number of interviews and collected a great deal of other information on their own. As this work continues now into the New Year, I believe it is time to share with you the information – two White Papers, along with supporting materials — that my representatives have shared with Arizona authorities.

As always, we appreciate all the support that we’ve all received during this difficult situation and time.

2 Dead, 19 Overcome at Arizona Retreat Sweat Lodge
FOX News
Friday, October 9, 2009

SEDONA, Ariz. – Two people died and an estimated 19 others were taken to hospitals after being overcome while sitting in a sauna-like sweat lodge at a Sedona retreat, authorities said Friday.

Detectives have learned that 64 people were inside the crudely constructed “sweatbox” when some of the participants became ill at at the 70-acre Angel Valley resort Thursday evening.

The facility nestled in the forest about 20 minutes from Sedona provides spiritual retreats.  The resort is next to GOP Sen. John McCain’s ranch.

Many people began feeling ill after about two hours in the sweat box, emerging lightheaded and weak, said Verde Valley Fire District Chief Jerry Doerksen.

A man, identified as James Ray, hosted this particular group and rented the facility from the owners of the Angel Valley retreat center. Some attendees told detectives they paid up to $9,000.00 for their stay and participation in the program. James Ray was inside the dome when the medical emergencies occurred. He was interviewed by detectives Thursday night and has left the facility.

James Ray wrote the book Harmonic Wealth and has been featured on television shows such as Oprah and Larry King.

About 21 people were taken by ambulance or helicopter to area hospitals, where two were pronounced dead, D’Evelyn said. The dead were identified only as a man and woman, both middle-aged.

Three people taken to Flagstaff Medical Center were listed in critical condition Friday, and another was in fair condition. Three others who were admitted to a hospital in nearby Verde Valley recovered quickly; two of them were released overnight and one was reported in good condition Friday.

Sheriff’s homicide investigators were working to determine what happened and whether any criminal actions might have been a factor in the incident, D’Evelyn said. They were at the resort Friday
interviewing the retreat director, staff and guests.

D’Evelyn said authorities were checking into whether any of the attendees had preexisting medical conditions and the possibility that some of the people might have been fasting.

“There are a lot of issues that may have led up to these injuries and deaths,” he said.

“It’s not something you’d normally see at one of the resorts there,” he added, “and it’s unfortunate regardless of the cause.”

Doerksen, whose fire district responded to emergency calls, said he sent a hazardous materials team into the sweat lodge to test for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other contaminants.

“The test they ran didn’t show anything out of the ordinary,” he said.

Sedona is a resort town about 115 miles north of Phoenix famous for its red rocks. It is well-known as a center for the modern spiritual movement.

A woman who answered the phone at the resort Friday said its founders, Michael and Amayra Hamilton, would have no comment. The resort’s Web site credits various vortexes, a creek and the surrounding vegetation as a way to transform, heal and nourish visitors.
